awakening

I just watched Into The Wild last night. Finally. It was inspiring. Awakening. See, the thing is, the thing that keeps me here, that keeps me surrounded by things that feel empty and unnecessary, the thing that makes me different than these people that inspire me, is fear. Not the fear of eating the wrong leaf or root or berry but the fear of realizing how incomplete people, myself included to a ridiculous degree, make their lives by filling it with things. But an even bigger fear for me is not having the people I love the most there with me. I'm not sure that's necessarily a fear... I mean, I love these people. I would feel so alone without them. I don't know how a decision to leave that could be made. That's scary, man, to be awakened to the fact that you are a completely dependent person. What kind of strength and courage does it take to just walk away? All I know is that its the kind I don't have.

Some memorable quotes:

"Cause, you know what I don't understand? I don't understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often. It doesn't make sense to me. Judgment. Control. All that, the whole spectrum."

"Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past. "

"If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, then all possibility of life is destroyed."

"So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."

Maybe you think Chris McCandless was a crazy person. That he was insane beyond comprehensible measure. Maybe you're right. Or just maybe you're completely wrong.

"Rather than love, than money, than fame... give me truth." - Henry David Thoreau

I've wanted to blog about Shaun Ellis since we watched "A Man Among Wolves" but I haven't. This seems a fitting post to mention him. I think it probably goes without saying but I'll say it anyway. This man is a hero to me.

Healing thoughts, good vibes and prayers

My father-in-law is going in for surgery today at noon. I am requesting and welcoming all the positive thoughts you can spare. Thank you.
